Explore Your Senses! Excursions through Tanzanian History, Modern Culture, and the Psychology of Skin Bleaching
The program abroad will feature exciting week-long stays in Dar es Salaam, Arusha, and Zanzibar with short day trips to surrounding areas. Students will have the opportunity to participate in experiential learning within a variety of community contexts including: (1) visits to historical sites, monuments, and museums (e.g., slave market, slave caravan, prison island, colonial buildings, Olduvai Gorge- “The Cradle of Mankind”);(2) visits to contemporary sites that illustrate the economic and cultural diversity of East Africa; (3) discussions with Tanzanian experts on prehistory, slavery, colonization, and its linkages to modern day skin bleaching products and practices; (4) safaris in some of the most popular game drives in Africa ; (5) visits to some of the most pristine beaches in the world; and (6) after-hours enjoyment in local restaurants and entertainment venues. Experiential learning, lectures and discussion will focus on Tanzania’s transition from slavery to colonization to skin bleaching led by faculty from Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences (MUHAS).

Day 1: Depart Atlanta (overnight)
Day 2: Arrive in Dar es Sallam and rest.
Day 3: On-site safety orientation and day tour of city of Dar es Sallam; free time
Day 4: Depart on ferry boat for Zanzibar (3-hour ride) and a tour around the city
Day 5-9: Zanzibar site visits and free time; depart for Arusha
Day 10-12: Depart for Arusha for site visits to Tanzanian colonial post tour and 3-ay lodge safari to Ngorogoro Crater, Lake Manyara and Masai Mara. Excursions to the Great Rift Valley and the Olduvai Gorge, also known as “the Cradle of Mankind.” Return to Dar es Salaam.
Day 13: Discussion/cultural excursions in Dar es Sallam on colonialism links to slave trade and modern-day culture/skin bleaching; day trips; free time
Day 14: Depart Tanzania (overnight flight)
Day 15: Arrive in Atlanta

This program abroad will feature an exciting week-long stay in Rio de Janeiro, the capitol and second largest city in Brazil, and the third largest metropolitan area in South America.
This exciting trip is designed for students interested in exploring the serious problem of human trafficking in Brazil and the human rights efforts to fight trafficking. Students will engage in discussions about human and sex trafficking with organizations and activists who work to bring awareness, prevention, and rescue to victims of human and sex trafficking.
We will explore the history of minority communities LGBTQIA+ & Afro-Brazilian to understand why they are high targets in human and sex trafficking operations.
Rio is known for its natural beauty, Carnival celebrations, samba, Bossa Nova, and renowned beaches. Students have the chance to visit Rio’s iconic landmarks that include the giant statue of Christ the Redeemer atop Corcovado Mountain, one of the New Seven Wonders of the World, and Maracanã stadium, one of the world’s largest football stadiums.
We will discover the nature of Rio in fun tours with stops at the famous Botanical Gardens, the homes to varieties of plant species, Mirante Vista Chinese from where you can admire the panoramic view over the beaches of Ipanema and Copacabana, and Guanabara Bay and Niteroi, and Tijuca Forest, the largest urban forest in the world.

Day 3: Visit Afro-Brazil Museum, guided tour that explores the history inextricably tied to the experience of African slaves and their descendants; learn about the culture and traditions that have come to define the country and its modern-day effects on human trafficking; discussion and questions with tour guide; free time
Day 4: Discussion/cultural excursions; day trips to organization against sex/human trafficking; dinner cruise on Guanabara Bay

Come be a part of an incredible journey around the country of China. This trip guarantees an eye-opening perspective into another culture.
Moving through four cities, travelers will have the chance to experience the vast differences in the culture by exploring urban cities, small villages, and natural reserves.
The advanced ability of China to censor information allows the government to have full control over everything the people know and believe. There is a deep-rooted belief by China’s citizens that this eradication of freedom is for the betterment of themselves. It has cognitively shaped their view of history and the future of their country. The censorship of politics will be explained through a tour of Tiananmen Square.
The first segment of our trip will also take the travelers through some very well-known sites such as the Great Wall, Forbidden City, and the Terracotta Warriors.
The second segment will follow the censorship of religions, highlighted by a visit to the Muslim Quarters in Xi’an. This city will also feature the Terracotta Warriors, a dance performance, and a chance to eat with a local family.
The final segment involves the censorship of social media and psychological issues. Travelers will be given the opportunity to talk to some local students about the ways they get around censorship laws and still have a presence on social media.

Day 2: Day tour of the city of Beijing, including the symbolic association with the censorship of past government crimes, Tiananmen Square
Day 3: Visit the Great Wall and the Olympic Station – Participants will visit downtown and walk through the local market.
Day 4: Visit the Summer Palace and take the Hutong tour; take a flight to Xi’an
Day 5: Cultural immersive lunch with a local Chinese family; discussions on censorship and its effect on the average citizen
Day 6: Cultural excursion through the Muslim Quarters to visit the Great Mosque and the market place in order to discuss the everyday effects of the persecution of Muslims; take a flight to Zhangjiajie
Day 7: Visit the Yuanjiajie scenic area, Tianzi Mountain Nature Reserve, Golden Whip Stream, and a ten-mile gallery.
Day 8: Explore the Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon and a boat excursion along the Baofeng Lake
Day 9: Take the world’s longest cable car and ascend Tian Men Mountain; fly to Shanghai
Day 10: Visits the Shanghai Museum, Yu Garden; take a short cruise tour along Huangpu River
Day 11: Take a train ride to Wuxi and have a discussion with local high school students about the modern-day effects of censorship; return to Shanghai

This program is designed for a wide variety of students, including those interested in studying the political and economic challenges facing sub-Saharan Africa and developing nations, and those interested in studying West African cultural practices in various musical and dance forms.
The course also offers wonderful opportunities, in the classroom and in the community, for students interested in critical issues of public health, development, and African history and culture, and how these issues effect mental health in the community.
Through these mechanisms’ students become participants in, and contributors to, Ghanaian intellectual, cultural, economic, and social life.
They will get the opportunity to visit the largest slave dungeon in West Africa, Elmina Castle. Students will visit Cape Coast, one of the largest slave trading center in West Africa. It was here that slaves were brought, held, and then sent to the New World.
Throughout these activities, travelers will get the chance to understand the psychological impact that the slave trade had on the culture then and now.
