PTSD & Depression Education

For active-duty service members, veterans, and their families, the invisible wounds of service—such as PTSD and severe depression—are challenging realities. Often, standard treatments like medications or standard talk therapy aren't enough to provide long-lasting relief. When standard therapies fail to relieve debilitating symptoms, it is often classified as Treatment-Resistant Depression (TRD).

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) is an FDA-cleared, non-invasive, drug-free treatment that uses magnetic fields to stimulate nerve cells in the brain to improve symptoms of conditions like depression and OCD. We are proud to offer TRICARE TMS in Atlanta to our military community, providing a beacon of hope when other treatments have fallen short.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does TRICARE cover TMS for PTSD?
Currently, TRICARE typically covers TMS specifically for Major Depressive Disorder (Treatment-Resistant Depression). While PTSD and depression frequently co-occur among veterans, the primary formal diagnosis submitted for TRICARE coverage approval must typically be MDD.
How long is a typical TMS course of treatment?
A standard authorized course of TMS for depression usually involves treatments five days a week for about 4 to 6 weeks, followed by a 3-week tapering period. Each individual session typically lasts between 20 to 40 minutes, depending entirely on the specific, physician-prescribed protocol being utilized.
Are there any side effects from TMS Therapy?
TMS is generally very well tolerated. The most common minor side effects are mild scalp discomfort or a light headache during or immediately after the session, which usually resolves quickly. Because it is non-systemic (unlike medication), it does not cause weight gain, sexual dysfunction, or cognitive dulling.
Do I have to stop my current medications to start TMS?
No, you do not necessarily have to stop your antidepressants. In fact, TMS is frequently used safely in conjunction with existing psychiatric medications. Our providers will rigorously review your medication list during your initial consultation to ensure maximum safety and efficacy.
How do I get the TRICARE authorization for TMS?
Our dedicated billing and administrative staff will help handle the bulk of this process for you. Typically, if you are active duty or on TRICARE Prime, you simply request an initial referral from your Primary Care Manager (PCM), and our office will submit the subsequent detailed clinical authorization requests directly to TRICARE on your behalf to minimize delays.
